It does this through the use of two semicircular plates or discs, each of which is positioned within the valve body. These plates are typically hinge-mounted on a central shaft, which is located at the center of the valve. The plates are oriented in such a way that they can swing open and close freely within the valve chamber.

When the fluid flow in the desired direction, it exerts pressure on the upstream side of the valve plates. This pressure forces the plates to pivot away from the flow path, allowing the fluid to pass through the valve with minimal resistance. However, when there is a reversal in flow or backpressure occurs, the fluid exerts force on the downstream side of the plates, causing them to quickly close and create a barrier that prevents any backflow from occurring.
