A butterfly valve uses a quarter-turn disc for pipeline isolation or regulation. Its compact face-to-face dimension is useful in larger sizes, while concentric, double-offset and triple-offset designs address different pressure, temperature and shut-off duties. Speciality Valve selects the body style, seat, disc, shaft and actuator based on the medium, pressure class, operating frequency and required leakage performance. Double Eccentric Butterfly Valve: Uses two shaft offsets so the disc moves away from the seat early in the opening stroke, reducing seat contact, wear and operating torque. Double Flanged Butterfly Valve: Uses integral flanges for bolted connection to the pipeline and is commonly selected for larger piping systems where a robust flanged installation is required. Lug Butterfly Valve: Employs body lugs and threading for mounting. It allows one-sided line isolation if the approved design supports end-of-line service. Triple Eccentric Butterfly Valve: Has three offsets and camming action during closure. Supports metal-seated construction for selected high-temperature, higher-pressure and severe-service applications. Wafer Butterfly Valve: Mounts between mating flanges. The double offset butterfly valve has its shaft positioned off both the center line of the pipe and the center line of the disc. The disc separates rapidly from the seat when opening to minimize friction and operating torque. This design is commonly used for water, utility and industrial isolation duties where reduced seat wear and operating torque are required. The triple offset butterfly valve has an additional angular sealing offset. The disc seats against the seat using a cam action to minimize sliding. This design facilitates metal seating, higher temperature, cycling, and low leakage requirements. Seat material controls media compatibility, temperature capability and leakage performance. EPDM is commonly selected for compatible water service, while NBR may suit selected oil and water duties. PTFE can handle compatible corrosive media within its pressure-temperature limits. Metallic or laminated seats may be selected for higher-temperature or severe-service duties when supported by the valve design. The disc and shaft material should be capable of resisting corrosion, erosion, bending moment, and actuator torque. The selection should also consider the bearing arrangement, stem sealing, flow velocity, potential cavitation and any applicable fire-safe requirements. Water Treatment and Distribution: Pipeline isolation and flow regulation in compatible water systems. Cooling-Water Systems: Isolation and regulation in power-generation and industrial cooling circuits. Process Pipelines: Isolation or regulation in compatible refinery and petrochemical services. Marine and Seawater Systems: Pipeline isolation in compatible seawater and offshore services.
