The relief calculation should consider the credible overpressure scenario rather than simply matching the valve to the normal operating flow rate. Fire exposure, blocked outlet, control-valve failure, utility failure and other process-specific contingencies may require separate evaluation.

Pressure Relief Construction Options:

  • Spring-loaded design: Uses a calibrated spring to maintain the set load on the disc.

  • Balanced bellows design: Incorporates a bellows arrangement to reduce the influence of back pressure on spring loading and protect internal spring components from the process medium.

  • Pilot-operated design: Uses a pilot mechanism and system pressure to control the main valve, making it useful for certain high-pressure or high-capacity applications.

  • Metal-seated construction: Used where temperature, pressure or process conditions require a robust seating arrangement.

Grade selection depends on pressure, temperature, process compatibility and the applicable valve design. Internal trim and spring materials may require different grades from the pressure-containing body.
