Where stainless steel does not provide sufficient corrosion resistance in seawater, wet chlorine or selected oxidising environments, titanium may be considered for valve construction. Speciality Valve offers titanium ball, butterfly, check, gate and globe valves for corrosion-critical services. Valve design and titanium grade should be selected according to the process medium, concentration, temperature, pressure and corrosion conditions. Titanium develops a thin, stable oxide film that gives it strong resistance in many chloride-bearing and oxidising environments. This can give titanium an advantage over SS316 in services involving: Seawater and high-chloride environments Wet chlorine Hypochlorite solutions Selected brines Certain oxidising chemical streams Titanium also combines comparatively low density with good mechanical strength. The applicable titanium grade depends on the valve component, manufacturing form and process environment. Grade 2: Commercially pure titanium and one of the most commonly considered grades for corrosion-resistant process equipment. It is widely evaluated for seawater, desalination and selected oxidising chemical duties. Grade 5 – Ti-6Al-4V: Provides substantially greater mechanical strength than commercially pure titanium. Higher strength does not mean it offers better corrosion resistance in every chemical environment. Grade 7: Contains a small palladium addition that improves corrosion performance in certain environments where commercially pure titanium may be less resistant. Grade 12: Contains nickel and molybdenum and can offer improved strength and corrosion behaviour in selected applications. Speciality Valve manufactures: Titanium Ball Valve: Quarter-turn isolation for compatible corrosive process lines. Titanium Butterfly Valve: Compact quarter-turn isolation or regulation for compatible process piping. Titanium Check Valve: Automatic prevention of reverse flow. Titanium Gate Valve: Straight-through isolation where low pressure loss in the open position is required. Titanium Globe Valve: Used where throttling or more controlled flow adjustment is required. Seawater Intake and Discharge: Valve wetted parts exposed continuously to chloride-bearing seawater. Reverse-Osmosis Desalination: High-chloride feed, brine and concentrate lines where metallurgy requires careful corrosion control. Chlor-Alkali Processing: Selected wet-chlorine and hypochlorite services after chemistry and temperature verification. Offshore Seawater Systems: Isolation and control duties where corrosion resistance and lower component weight are useful. Corrosion-Critical Chemical Lines: Selected oxidising chemical services where stainless steel does not provide the required corrosion margin. Titanium is most valuable when its corrosion behaviour provides a real advantage over conventional stainless steel or other alloys. It may be unnecessary where SS316 or duplex stainless steel already provides adequate service life, while fluoride-containing and certain strongly reducing environments require particular caution because they can compromise titanium’s protective passive film.
