Conventional spring-loaded safety valves use direct spring force to maintain the closed position until the set pressure is reached. Blowdown and Back Pressure:

  • Set pressure: The pressure at which the valve is calibrated to open under the specified test conditions.

  • Overpressure: The pressure increase available to develop the required relieving capacity.

  • Blowdown: The pressure difference between opening and reseating.

  • Superimposed back pressure: Outlet pressure present before the valve opens.

  • Built-up back pressure: Outlet pressure generated by flow through the discharge system.

  • Stability: Excessive back pressure or incorrect inlet/discharge piping can affect valve performance.

  • Inlet pressure loss: Excessive pressure loss upstream of the valve can affect opening characteristics and stability.

  • Spring range: The spring must be appropriate for the required set-pressure range and temperature conditions.

A conventional arrangement is generally most straightforward where the outlet pressure conditions are predictable and remain within the limits established for the selected valve.
