Incoloy valves use nickel-iron-chromium alloys selected for applications requiring a balance of elevated-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. Grades 800, 800H and 800HT are associated mainly with elevated-temperature oxidation and creep performance, while grade 825 is selected more often for corrosion resistance in compatible acid and chloride environments. Grade and valve construction should be selected according to the operating temperature, process chemistry, pressure and required mechanical performance.

When Is Incoloy Valve Selected?

Incoloy may be selected where elevated temperature, oxidation resistance, thermal cycling or corrosive process conditions require performance beyond conventional stainless-steel construction. The 800/800H/800HT family is mainly associated with elevated-temperature service, while Incoloy 825 is selected more often for compatible corrosive chemical and chloride-bearing environments.

Incoloy Valve Types:

  • Incoloy Gate Valve: Straight-through isolation with low flow restriction when fully open.

  • Incoloy Globe Valve: Used for controlled throttling and flow regulation.

Incoloy Grade Selection:

For elevated-temperature service, grade selection should consider oxidation resistance, design temperature, required creep strength and the applicable material specification. For corrosion service, the complete fluid chemistry and all wetted materials should be reviewed. Grade 800H/800HT and grade 825 should not be treated as interchangeable.

Incoloy 800HT vs 825:

Incoloy 800, 800H and 800HT are selected primarily for oxidation resistance and mechanical performance at elevated temperature. The applicable grade depends on the design temperature, required creep strength and governing material specification.

Incoloy 825 (UNS N08825) contains molybdenum and copper and is selected more often for corrosion resistance in compatible acid and chloride service. It is not a direct high-temperature substitute for the 800H/800HT family; the choice must follow the dominant thermal or corrosion requirement.

Incoloy Valve Materials:

  • Body and Bonnet: Selected Incoloy 800-series grade or Incoloy 825 according to service requirements.

  • Trim: Selected corrosion-resistant material compatible with the body grade, process chemistry and temperature.

  • Stem: Selected Incoloy or nickel-alloy material compatible with the service conditions and valve design.

  • Seat / Seating Surface: Selected metallic seat material or hardfacing, where applicable, according to valve design and service conditions.

  • Packing: Graphite, PTFE or other specified packing material, selected within the applicable temperature and chemical limits.

  • Gasket: Graphite, spiral-wound metallic/graphite or other design-specific gasket arrangement.

  • Fasteners: Stainless steel, alloy steel or specified nickel alloy according to temperature, pressure and design requirements.

Incoloy Valve Testing:

Material verification should include grade identification and traceability, with PMI, material-certification review and hardness checks applied where specified.

Testing can include:

  • Dimensional inspection

  • Body pressure testing

  • Seat leakage testing

  • Functional operation checks

Additional inspection such as radiographic, ultrasonic or other non-destructive examination can be specified for pressure-containing components according to the valve design and project requirements.

Pressure and leakage testing may follow API 598, ISO 5208 or applicable project requirements, depending on valve design.

Incoloy Valve Applications:

  • High-Temperature Process Isolation – 800/800H/800HT: Gate or Globe Valve duties where elevated-temperature oxidation resistance and mechanical strength are required.

  • Heat-Treatment Systems – 800-Series: Isolation or control duties exposed to sustained elevated temperatures.

  • Corrosive Chemical Transfer – 825: Selected acid or chloride-bearing process duties where Incoloy 825 is compatible with the full process chemistry.

  • Petrochemical Process Piping: Selected high-temperature or corrosive duties where the relevant Incoloy grade is justified.

  • High-Temperature Utility or Process Lines: Services where conventional stainless steel does not provide the required thermal performance.
