Difference Between Gate Valve and Globe Valve

It is called as a Gate Valve because it allows the flow to be in one direction, which slides into the flow to shutoff therefore acting like a Gate. Whereas a Globe Valve is primarily designed to stop, start and regulate flow using a closure member referred as a disc. Globe valves are most suitable and widely used for throttling and controlling fluid flow; generally employed in small size piping. The disc can be completely removed from the path or can completely close the path of flow.

Advantages of Gate and Globe valve:

Gate Valve:  It provides a good pressure drop during less operations. It can be used in bi-directional applications, as it also is suitable for high pressure and temperature and requires less maintenance.


Globe Valve: It has a good sealing capacity, and moderate to good throttling capability. Provides a wide range of capabilities as available in TEE, WYE and Angel body styles. Machining and resurfacing of the seats are easy. The globe valve can be used as a stop-check valve by modifying the design slightly.
